宇治の秋の夜、薫、屏風を押し開け、執拗に大君に迫るが、つれなく拒まれる。

On an autumn night at Uji, Kaoru pushes open a screen and persistently presses the eldest sister, but is coldly refused.

匂宮、薫とともに勾欄により遣水に月の映る秋の庭を眺め、宇治の姫君たちへの想いを語り合う。

Prince Niou and Kaoru, leaning on the balustrade, view the autumn garden with the moon reflected in the stream and speak of their feelings for the Uji princesses.

匂宮、中の君と明けゆく宇治川を眺める。霧立ち、柴を積んだ舟が川面を行き交う。

Prince Niou and the middle sister watch the Uji River at dawn; mist rises and boats piled with brushwood pass on the water.

In the tenth month Prince Niou, Kaoru, and others float boats on the Uji River for autumn-leaf viewing; women watch from the Eighth Prince's villa.

八の宮の一周忌を機に薫は大君へ激しく想いを迫るが拒まれ、中君との結婚を斡旋される。薫は大君への誠意を示すため匂宮を手引きして中君と結ばせる。しかし匂宮の宇治通いは六条院の母・明石中宮の制止で途絶えがちになり、妹の不遇を嘆いた大君は自責の念から食を断って衰弱。最期まで貞潔を守り、薫の手の中で息を引き取る。薫は宇治川のほとりで絶望に沈む。

Kaoru arranges a match between Prince Niou and Naka no Kimi, hoping to demonstrate his unselfish devotion to Oigimi. When Niou's visits to Uji slacken due to royal opposition, Oigimi is stricken with guilt over her sister's uncertain fate, falling into fatal melancholy. Maintaining her maidenly refusal to the last, she dies in Kaoru's weeping arms, shattering his spirit.
