九相図巻

What is Kusōzu?

Kusōzu (Nine Stages of Decay) is Buddhist art depicting nine stages of a corpse plus the living form — ten scenes from life to ashes. These works contrast beauty with impermanence and support meditative contemplation. On this site you can unroll kusōzu picture scrolls horizontally, scene by scene.

Viewing tips — pause at each section to take in the art. For kusōzu scrolls, slow contemplative viewing is recommended.
