帝（桐壺帝）はそれほど身分が高くない桐壺更衣を寵愛し皇子を儲けるが、更衣はやがて病死する。これを深く嘆く帝を慰めるために亡き更衣に生き写しの藤壺が入内し、新たな寵愛を得る。一方で皇子は帝の元で育てられ、亡き母・桐壺更衣に似るという藤壺をことに慕うようになる。帝は元服した皇子を臣籍降下させて源姓を与える。彼はその光り輝くような美貌から光源氏と呼ばれるようになり、左大臣家娘葵の上の婿に迎えられる。

On a rainy night in May, To no Chujo visits Genji's night quarters and takes interest in mysterious letters; Sama no Kami and Toshikibu no Jo join a debate on women (the rainy-night ranking).

左馬頭の体験談 女を訪ねるある殿上人に同行したところ簀子に腰掛けて笛を吹く男がいた。 御簾の内より琴を合わせる女はかつて左馬頭が通っていた女であった (木枯しの女)。

Sama no Kami's tale: accompanying a courtier to a woman's house, they see a man playing a flute on the veranda; inside, a woman answers on the koto, once known to Sama no Kami.

源氏、 方違えで、 中川の紀伊守の邸に行き、歓待される。

Avoiding an unlucky direction, Genji visits the Governor of Kii's residence at Nakagawa and is entertained.

Genji has his attendant pick an evening glory blooming on the fence of his nurse's neighbor; a girl comes out and offers a fan to hold the flowers, while women watch his carriage from the raised shutter.

源氏、惟光に紙燭を持たせて扇をみると、女の移り香が染み、歌が書石の入道の娘の話など、供人たちが語るのを聞いた。

Genji has Koremitsu bring a lamp; on the fan he finds the woman's lingering scent and a poem, and hears attendants tell of the daughter of the stone-weaving recluse.

六条御息所を訪れた翌朝、源氏、廊まで送りに出た中将の君を振り返りみて歌を交わす。 庭で侍童が朝顔を摘んでいる。

The morning after visiting the Lady of Rokujo, Genji looks back at the Chujo no Kimi who saw him to the corridor and exchanges poems; a page picks morning glories in the garden.

夕顔の宿に泊まった源氏、変わらぬ愛を誓う。砧の音や祈る年老いた声などが聞こえる。

Genji stays at Yugao's lodging and pledges unchanging love; he hears fulling mallets and an old woman's prayers.

源氏は身分を隠したまま五条辺りに住う夕顔と関係を持つ。夕顔は親友・頭中将の元恋人で、行方知れずになっていた人であった。源氏は可憐で素直な夕顔を深く愛するが、ある逢瀬の最中に六条御息所が嫉妬のあまり生霊となって、これをとり殺す。源氏は夕顔の死を深く嘆く。

源氏、一夜尼君の兄の僧都の坊を訪ね、少女の素性を聞く。庭には遣水を引き篝火をともして趣き深いようす。

Genji visits the Bishop's monastery and asks about the girl's parentage; the garden, with its stream and bonfires, is deeply charming.

源氏、物思いに悩み眠れぬ。滝の音も強くなったように聞こえる。

翌年の春、傷心の源氏は病気の加療のため北山に赴き、そこで祖母の尼君とともに住まう美貌の幼女を見かける。藤壺の姪にあたる彼女に源氏は執心し、引き取って手元で育てたいと申し入れるが尼君は応じない。夏、藤壺が病気のため宿下りする。源氏は二度目の密会を行い、直後に彼女の妊娠が発覚する。冬、源氏は北山の幼女を半ば拐うようにして手元に引き取る。若紫と呼ばれる彼女こそ、のちの紫の上である。

源氏、 常陸宮邸に忍ぶと、身をやつした姿ですでに来ていた頭中将を見いだす。邸内では末摘花、琴を弾く。

Stealing into Hitachi no Miya's residence, Genji finds To no Chujo already there in disguise; inside, Suetsumuhana plays the koto.

二人は、一つ車で左大臣邸へ向かう。源氏、車の中で笛を吹く。

冬の夜、末摘花邸を訪ねた源氏が格子を叩くと、女房が灯をとって迎え入れる。

On a winter night Genji visits Suetsumuhana's residence and knocks at the lattice; a lady-in-waiting brings a light to welcome him.

常陸宮の姫君が廃邸にひっそりと暮しているという噂に源氏と頭中将が心惹かれ、競って言い寄る。源氏が一足早く彼女と関係してみると、前評判を裏切る長く垂れた鼻の醜女で源氏は閉口する。鼻の先が紅花で染めたように赤かったことに掛けて、彼女を末摘花という。

元旦、朝拝に参内する源氏、 雛遊びに熱中している紫の君のもとに立ち寄る。

On New Year's Day Genji, attending court, stops by Murasaki, who is absorbed in playing with dolls.

藤壺との恋に悩む源氏、気晴らしに笛を吹きながら桂姿で紫の君の居間を覗く。 待ちくたびれた紫の君は不機嫌に横を向いている。

Troubled by his love for Fujitsubo, Genji in a casual guise plays the flute and peeps into Murasaki's room; tired of waiting, she sulks and turns away.

源氏、機嫌をなおした紫の君に琴を教えたあと、灯火をつけて二人で絵を見る。

After teaching a now-cheerful Murasaki the koto, Genji lights a lamp and the two look at pictures.

源氏、温明殿の辺りを歩き、琵琶を弾く源内侍と戯れる。

Genji walks near the Unmeiden and frolics with Gen'nai no Naishi, who plays the biwa.

帝が上皇の長寿のお祝いを紅葉賀と銘打って主催し、源氏はこれに舞を舞う。その舞姿は宮中でも試楽され、藤壺を始め大宮人はその姿に賛嘆する。翌年の春、藤壺が男子を出産する。帝はみずからの子と信じて疑わず、これを現東宮の次の東宮にすえたいと考える。

桜花の宴の果てた月夜、源氏、弘徽殿の細殿で扇をかざして歩いてくる女朧月夜)に逢う。

On a moonlit night after the cherry-blossom banquet, Genji meets a woman (Oborozukiyo) walking with a fan in the corridor of the Kokiden.

一夜を過ごした女は相手が源氏と知ってか、慌てず、二人は扇を取り換えて別れる。

After the night, the woman stays calm even on learning her lover is Genji; the two exchange fans and part.

右大臣邸の藤花の宴に招かれた源氏、 花宴の夜の女を探し、女一宮、女三宮のいる部屋の御簾を引く。 源氏は裾を長く引いた大君姿。

Invited to the wisteria banquet at the Minister of the Right's residence, Genji seeks the woman of the banquet night and pulls aside the blinds of the room of the First and Third Princesses; Genji wears a long-trailed court-lady's guise.

女(朧月夜)を捜し当てた源氏、几帳ごしに手を取り歌を交わす。

Finding the woman (Oborozukiyo), Genji takes her hand through the screen and exchanges poems.

翌年の春、宮中の観桜の宴の後、源氏はさる姫君と関係を持つ。春の末、政敵・右大臣家の宴に招かれた源氏は、彼女がまもなくみずからの兄の元に入内する右大臣の娘・朧月夜の君であることを知る。

斎院の御禊行列見物の葵の上一行、やはり見物にきていた六条御息所の車と遭遇、召使いたち御息所の車を押しのける(車争い)。

Lady Aoi's procession viewing the Kamo purification meets the carriage of the Lady of Rokujo, also viewing; Aoi's servants push Rokujo's carriage aside (the carriage quarrel).

源氏、賀茂祭見物に紫の君を連れ出そうとし、その髪を自らそぐ。

Genji tries to take Murasaki to see the Kamo festival and trims her hair himself.

秋の朝、六条御息所から届いた、菊の枝につけられた見舞いの文に返歌をしたためる源氏。

On an autumn morning Genji writes a reply to Lady Rokujo's get-well letter attached to a chrysanthemum branch.

二年後。桐壺帝はすでに退位し、源氏の兄・朱雀帝が即位している。賀茂祭の折、車の場所争いのことで六条御息所は葵の上によって辱めを受け、これを深く恨む。折から妊娠していた葵の上は産褥で御息所の生霊に苦しめられ、無事男子（夕霧）を出産するものの亡くなる。夏の終わり、源氏は紫の上と新枕を交わす。

晩秋の野宮に六条御息所を訪ねた源氏、榊の枝を御簾の中に差し入れ、歌を交わす。

Visiting the Lady of Rokujo at the Nonomiya in late autumn, Genji slips a sakaki branch through the blinds and exchanges poems.

桐壺帝崩御後、三条宮に下る藤壺中宮を源氏と螢兵部卿宮が見舞い慰める。庭の池は凍り、五葉松に雪降り積もる。

After Emperor Kiritsubo's death, Genji and Hotaru Hyobukyo no Miya visit and comfort Fujitsubo, now moving to Sanjo Palace; the garden pond freezes and snow piles on the five-needle pine.

藤壺を慕って忍びいった源氏、屏風の狭間を伝って藤壺の室に入り込もうとする。

Longing for Fujitsubo, Genji steals in and tries to enter her chamber through a gap in the screens.

雲林院に籠もった源氏より文をつけて届けられた紅葉を藤壺うとましく思い、瓶にいれて廂の柱のもとに遠ざける。

Fujitsubo finds the autumn leaves sent with a poem by Genji, cloistered at Unrin-in, distasteful, and has them placed in a vase by a gallery pillar.

桐壺院の一周忌の後まもなく藤壺出家。驚いた源氏、命婦を介して悲しみを訴える。雪に月、くまなく照る。

Soon after the first anniversary of Emperor Kiritsubo, Fujitsubo takes the tonsure; shocked, Genji laments through Myobu; snow and moon shine everywhere.

六条御息所はみずからの生霊の恐ろしさに怯え、娘が伊勢斎宮となったのを機に、ともに伊勢に下ることを決意して嵯峨野の野宮に籠もって潔斎する。秋の終わり、源氏は彼女を訪い、名残を惜しむ。冬、桐壺帝崩御。藤壺も源氏との関係を思い悩み、出家する。源氏と朧月夜は彼女の入内後も関係を続けていたために、翌年夏、密会の場を右大臣に見つけられる。これを口実に、桐壺帝の死で激化しつつあった政争で、右大臣派は源氏を陥れようとする。

Near Nakagawa, drawn by a koto, Genji sends Koremitsu in; a katsura tree stands before the gate and a cuckoo calls as it passes.

源氏、麗景殿女御 (花散里の姉)のもとでも時鳥を聞き、昔話をしてから、花散里に逢う。

At the Reikeiden Consort's (Hanachirusato's elder sister) Genji hears a cuckoo, talks of old times, and then meets Hanachirusato.

五月雨の晴れ間、源氏は故桐壺院の女御の一人・麗景殿女御のもとを訪れる。ひっそりと物静かな、昔語りのゆかしい風情に住みなしている人のもとで、源氏は父帝在世の頃をしのぶ。後に妻の一人となる女御の妹・花散里との出会いは作中に記述されておらず、この巻で久々の再会と言うかたちをとる。

左大臣邸の女房、中納言の君のもとで一泊した源氏、帰りぎわに勾欄によって桜を眺める。中納言の君、妻戸を開けて見送る。

After a night at the Minister's residence with the Chunagon no Kimi, Genji gazes at cherry blossoms from the balustrade on leaving; she opens the door to see him off.

流謫の源氏、須磨の秋の夜に一人琴を弾き謡う。惟光ら、目覚めて都を偲んですすり泣く。

In exile at Suma, Genji plays the koto and sings alone on an autumn night; Koremitsu and the others wake and weep longing for the capital.

源氏、海の見える廊に出て、 沖行く舟や雁の列を眺める。

Genji goes out to the corridor overlooking the sea and watches boats and lines of wild geese.

雪の降る日、源氏七弦琴を弾き、良清に歌わせ、 惟光に笛を吹かせて遊ぶ。

On a snowy day Genji plays the seven-stringed koto, has Yoshikiyo sing, and Koremitsu play the flute.

春となり、都の桜を偲ぶ源氏のもとを頭中将が見舞う。竹を編んだ垣を巡らせた唐風の山荘のようす。

In spring To no Chujo visits Genji, who longs for the capital's cherries; a Chinese-style villa ringed by a bamboo fence.

頭中将と源氏、ともに山荘の馬が稲を喰うさまを珍しく眺める。

Genji and To no Chujo watch with amusement a horse eating rice plants at the villa.

三月朔日上巳の日、源氏、浜で御禊、天変突発して暴風雨となる。

On the third day of the third month Genji performs purification at the beach; a sudden storm breaks.

罪せられそうな気配を敏感に察し、源氏は先手を打って須磨に隠遁する。関わりのある女君たちに別れを告げ、紫の上の身上を心配しつつ京を去る源氏の姿は、あわれぶかい。翌年春、海辺に源氏が上巳の禊を行うと天に嵐がおこる。一方で隣国の明石入道は、須磨に源氏が仮寓することを知って娘との結婚を画策する。

八月十三夜、源氏、馬に乗り、入江沿いに明石の君のもとに向かう。

On the thirteenth night of the eighth month, Genji rides along the inlet toward Lady Akashi.

明石の君、几帳の傍らで箏を弾きさしているところへ、源氏訪れる。

Lady Akashi plays the koto at the side of a screen; Genji visits.

明石の浦出立も間もない源氏、明石の君と一夜を過ごし琴を弾く。

Soon before leaving Akashi Bay, Genji spends a night with Lady Akashi, playing the koto.

琴の音に堪えられず、 入道、箏を娘に促し、御簾の内へと差し入れる。

Unable to bear the music, the recluse urges his daughter to play and slips a koto inside the blinds.

父帝の夢告により源氏は須磨を離れ、明石入道がこれを迎え入れる。入道の娘・明石の御方と源氏は関係し、やがて妊娠の兆候があらわれる。一方都では朱雀帝の夢に桐壺帝があらわれ、源氏は無実の旨を告げて叱責する。帝は源氏追放を悔いて勅旨によって帰京を命じる。源氏は明石の御方に心を残しつつ、京へと戻る。

On a hazy moonlit night in May, Genji visits Hanachirusato, hearing a water rail cry close by as they view the neglected garden and exchange poems.

秋、源氏供人を整え、住吉詣。 源氏の栄華を目のあたりにした明石の君の住吉詣の舟はそのまま住吉の浜を去る。

In autumn Genji sets out for Sumiyoshi with attendants; the boat of Lady Akashi, who has seen Genji's glory, leaves Sumiyoshi beach as it is.

源氏一行、難波に行き、明石の君の舟と邂逅。明石の君への歌を口ずさむ源氏に惟光は筆と硯を奉る。

Genji's party goes to Naniwa and encounters Lady Akashi's boat; as Genji hums a poem to her, Koremitsu offers brush and inkstone.

病のため出家した六条御息所を見舞った源氏、几帳の隙間より斎宮を垣間見る。

Genji visits the Lady of Rokujo, who has taken the tonsure through illness, and glimpses the Saiin through a gap in the curtain.

帰京後、源氏は順調に政界に復帰し、栄耀の道を歩みはじめる。年変わって、朱雀帝が退位する。実は源氏と藤壺の子でありながら東宮であった冷泉帝が即位する。秋、源氏は須磨明石の流浪を守護した住吉明神に詣でる。明石の御方もたまたまこれに来合わせていたが再会はできなかった。また新帝即位により斎宮が交替し、六条御息所とその娘の斎宮が帰京。間もなく御息所は病死する。源氏は御息所の遺言にしたがって彼女を養女とし、冷泉帝に入内させて斎宮女御とする。

荒れ果てた邸内で、困窮した暮しを続ける末摘花、かぐや姫物語などを絵に描いたものなど引き出してみて無聊を慰める。

In the desolate mansion, impoverished Suetsumuhana brings out pictures of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and the like to relieve her boredom.

末摘花の伯母、筑紫下向に際して末摘花を伴おうと荒れた邸を訪れ、わずかに格子の開いている南面に無作法に車を寄せる。

Suetsumuhana's aunt comes to the ruined mansion to take her along on a journey to Tsukushi, rudely drawing her carriage up to the south side where a lattice stands ajar.

源氏、花散里訪問の途上、松に藤のかかる荒廃した末摘花邸に気付き、惟光にようすをうかがわせる。

On the way to visit Hanachirusato, Genji notices the ruined residence with wisteria over the pines and has Koremitsu inquire.

末摘花邸の蓬の生い茂る庭を、惟光に露を払わせながら源氏進む。

Genji advances through the mugwort-grown garden of Suetsumuhana's residence as Koremitsu brushes the dew aside.

末摘花と再会した源氏、松(待つ)にことよせて歌を詠み、慰める。

Reunited with Suetsumuhana, Genji composes a poem on the pine (matsu, to wait) to comfort her.

源氏逼塞の間、ほかに頼るものとてない末摘花は一途に彼を待ち続け、落魄の生活にも耐えていた。帰京した源氏は彼女を訪れ、その純情に心を動かされる。
