Ukifune is raised by her mother's remarriage as the stepdaughter of a provincial governor, the Hitachi no Suke, and because of her father's wealth has many suitors. But her mother, wishing her to marry a nobleman, places her with Naka no Kimi. Her mother's hope is for Kaoru, but one night Niou discovers her and tries to force a union, so she is hurriedly taken away and later, after consultation with Kaoru, moved to Uji.

- 1Prince Niou opens the sliding door and catches Ukifune's hem; Ukifune turns to look at him, holding up her fan.
- 2The middle sister brings out pictures to show Ukifune and has Ukon read the text of the tale.
- 3Kaoru visits Ukifune's hideaway at Sanjo and waits on the rainy veranda.
- 4Kaoru, having spent the night at the Sanjo hideaway, brings his carriage to the door, takes Ukifune aboard, and tries to move her to Uji.
