Yugiri visits Tamakazura on Genji's errand, offers her a purple winter cherry from behind the blinds, and courts her; both are in mourning.

出仕まぢかの玉鬘のもとに諸方より懸想の文が届くが、玉鬘は見ようともしない。螢兵部卿宮よりも霜を置いた笹の枝につけた文が届く。

Suitors' letters arrive for Tamakazura, soon to enter court service, but she will not look at them; from Hotaru Hyobukyo no Miya comes a letter on a frost-covered bamboo branch.

秋、夕霧と玉鬘の祖母にあたる大宮が死去し、服喪のため玉鬘の出仕は延期となる。玉鬘が従姉妹であることを知った夕霧は、弔問に訪れた折に藤袴の一枝を御簾に差し入れて好意を告白するが、玉鬘にいなされる。蛍兵部卿宮や髭黒大将らからの求婚の文が殺到する中、玉鬘は行く末に不安を抱きながら喪に服す。

In autumn, grandmother Omiya passes away, deferring Tamakazura's imperial entry due to mourning. Aware that Tamakazura is his cousin, Yugiri visits her quarters and slips a spray of fujibakama into her blinds to express his affection, but is gracefully turned away. Suitors like Prince Hotaru and Lord Higekuro press their suits as Tamakazura waits out the mourning period.
