The Naidaijin invites Yugiri to a wisteria banquet, adds a wisteria spray to a cup, and recites a poem granting him Kumoi no Kari; Kashiwagi and others attend.

夕霧より雲居雁のもとに届いた後朝の文を内大臣読む。

The Naidaijin reads the letter to Kumoi no Kari that Yugiri had delivered.

三条殿に移った新婚の夕霧・雲居雁が、 大宮を偲んでいるところへ庭の紅葉の美しさに引かれて、父太政大臣が訪れる。

To the newlywed Yugiri and Kumoi no Kari, moved to Sanjo Palace, the father Daijo Daijin visits, drawn by the beauty of the garden's colored leaves as they long for the Omiya.

紅葉の六条院に行幸。反橋・渡殿に錦を敷き、東の池では鵜飼。

An imperial visit to the autumn-leaves Rokujo-in; brocade is spread on the arched bridge and gallery, and cormorant fishing is shown on the east pond.

内大臣は夕霧の成長と出世を認め、春の藤波の宴で藤の枝を添えて長年の頑なな態度を改め、娘・雲居の雁との結婚をついに許す。明石の姫君は東宮に入内。さらに冷泉帝は源氏が四十歳を迎えるにあたり、准太上天皇の待遇を贈る勅許を下す。冬、冷泉帝と朱雀院が揃って六条院へ行幸し、かつて高麗の人相見が予言した通り、臣下でありながら天子と同格の栄華を極めるに至る。

At a wisteria banquet, To no Chujo finally relents and sanctions the union of Yugiri and Kumoi no Kari. The Akashi Princess safely enters the Crown Prince's court. In celebration of Genji's upcoming fortieth year, Emperor Reizei elevates him to the status of Honorary Retired Emperor. In winter, an imperial progress to Rokujo-in fulfills the ancient prophecy that Genji would reach sovereign glory without sitting on the throne.
