At Uji, the Eighth Prince lives in pious Buddhist seclusion with his two daughters, Oigimi and Naka no Kimi. Kaoru frequents the mountain villa seeking religious instruction, but on an autumn night he catches sight of the sisters playing music and falls in love with Oigimi. An old waiting woman, Ben no Ama, discloses the secret of Kaoru's illicit paternity by Kashiwagi, giving him his true father's hidden letters.

- 1In the ninth month Kaoru rides along a misty, tree-grown mountain road toward the Eighth Prince at Uji.
- 2The middle sister at Uji invites the rising moon with a cup, and the eldest plays the koto and laughs; Kaoru glimpses the sisters lit by the moon at dawn.
- 3Kaoru, asking to be guided again, sits before the blinds where the princesses are and talks; Ben no Okina answers for the princesses.
- 4In the tenth month the Eighth Prince receives Kaoru and plays the koto; Kaoru joins on the biwa.
- 5After the Eighth Prince rises at dawn for devotions, Kaoru hears from Ben no Okina of the secret between Kashiwagi and the Third Princess and receives paper scraps.
