The Eighth Prince, Genji's younger brother, retires to Uji with his two daughters and leads a life devoted to Buddhism. Kaoru, troubled over his own birth, takes the Eighth Prince's way of life as his ideal and often visits his residence, and by chance comes to be deeply drawn to the elder daughter, Oigimi. When Kaoru returns to the capital and tells Niou of Uji, Niou too becomes interested.

Scenes

  1. 1In the ninth month Kaoru rides along a misty, tree-grown mountain road toward the Eighth Prince at Uji.
  2. 2The middle sister at Uji invites the rising moon with a cup, and the eldest plays the koto and laughs; Kaoru glimpses the sisters lit by the moon at dawn.
  3. 3Kaoru, asking to be guided again, sits before the blinds where the princesses are and talks; Ben no Okina answers for the princesses.
  4. 4In the tenth month the Eighth Prince receives Kaoru and plays the koto; Kaoru joins on the biwa.
  5. 5After the Eighth Prince rises at dawn for devotions, Kaoru hears from Ben no Okina of the secret between Kashiwagi and the Third Princess and receives paper scraps.
