六条院の正月、源氏、紫の上と鏡餅の祝いをする。

At the New Year at Rokujo-in, Genji celebrates with Murasaki over mirror mochi.

明石の君より鶯をつけた五葉松を飾った髭籠につけて明石の姫君に贈られた手紙を源氏見る。 子の日なので、女童たち、庭で小松を引く。

Genji sees the letter sent to the Akashi Princess, attached to a basket decorated with a five-needle pine and a warbler, from Lady Akashi; as it is the day of the rat, the girls pull young pines in the garden.

源氏、明石の君のもとを訪れ、琴などの置かれた室内で手習い反古を見て、自らも筆をとって書いてみるところへ、明石の君いざり出る。

Genji visits Lady Akashi and, in a room with kotos and such, examines old practice papers and takes up a brush himself, when Lady Akashi comes crawling out.

男踏歌の翌日、源氏、みごとな袋に収めてあった琴を数多く取り出して、調弦し、婦人たちを集めて内々の後宴をしようと考える。

The day after the men's toka, Genji takes out many fine kotos kept in splendid bags, tunes them, and plans a private after-feast for the ladies.

六条院で迎える華やかな新春。源氏は紫の上の春の町から各町を巡り、明石の君、花散里、玉鬘らに新年の挨拶を交わす。明石の御方から養女となった姫君へ届いた初音の和歌に源氏は胸を打たれる。六条院に集う若き貴公子たちは、新たに登場した源氏の令嬢・玉鬘の美貌の噂に心を奪われ、新年の宴の陰で恋心を募らせていく。

A resplendent New Year unfolds throughout the Rokujo-in as Genji makes ceremonial rounds through each quarter, exchanging poetic greetings with Murasaki no Ue, the Lady of Akashi, Hanachirusato, and Tamakazura. Genji is deeply touched by an affectionate 'first song' poem sent by the Lady of Akashi to her daughter. Meanwhile, young nobles visiting to pay respects find their minds set ablaze by rumors of Tamakazura's maidenly charm.
