その折、花散里の東の対から夕霧や柏木らの合奏が聞こえてくる。

At that time, from Hanachirusato's east wing comes the ensemble of Yugiri, Kashiwagi, and others.

源氏、夕霧・柏木らを玉鬘の方に招き、合奏。源氏は琴を弾く。 御簾の奥に玉鬘。

Genji invites Yugiri, Kashiwagi, and others to Tamakazura's side for an ensemble; Genji plays the koto, with Tamakazura behind the blinds.

初秋の冷気を感じる夜、源氏は玉鬘のもとを訪れ、庭に篝火を焚かせてその幽玄な風情に浸る。琴を枕にして玉鬘と添い臥し、肌を寄せて愛を訴えるが、玉鬘の頑なな恥じらいと困惑を見て一線を越えることは思いとどまる。折から夕霧や柏木らが奏でる笛の音が聞こえ、源氏は彼らを招き入れて合奏の宴を催す。

On an early autumn evening, Genji orders flares of bonfires lit by the pond, lying beside Tamakazura with a zither for a pillow. Though yearning for intimacy, he refrains from violating her modesty. Hearing Yugiri and Kashiwagi making music nearby, Genji invites them over for an elegant impromptu concert under the flare of the torches.
