On a summer evening Kaoru peeks at the First Princess and the ladies in thin robes cooling themselves with ice.

女一の宮の美しさに立ち去りがたい思いの薫、下使いの女房が引き返して来るのに気付き、身を隠す。

Kaoru, reluctant to leave the First Princess's beauty, notices a lower servant woman turning back and hides himself.

薫、昨日垣間見た女一の宮と同じ紅の羅の単衣を縫わせ、几帳に掛け置いたのを手ずから女二の宮に着せようとする。

薫、夕暮れに飛び交う蜻蛉を見て、大君や浮舟とのはかない縁を思う。

浮舟の失踪に気づいた宇治の女房たちは投水自殺と覚り、世間体を恐れて遺骸のないまま密かに荼毘に付して葬儀を済ませる。訃報を聞いた薫と匂宮はそれぞれ狂乱し悲嘆に暮れる。薫は四十九日法要を手厚く営むが、やがて夏、匂宮の妻・女一の宮の涼やかな美しさに惹かれ、空虚な心に蜻蛉のように儚い命の無常を感じる。

Discovering Ukifune's footwear by the water, her distraught attendants stage a sham funeral to hide her drowning. Both Kaoru and Niou are overwhelmed with agony upon receiving news of her death. Kaoru sponsors lavish memorial rites, but in summer catches a glimpse of the First Princess, meditating forlornly on the ephemerality of human existence like flitting dragonflies.
