With the new year, Onna San no Miya bears a boy, Kaoru, but Kashiwagi, gravely ill, dies, and Onna San no Miya, deeply conscious of her sin and slow to recover after childbirth, takes the tonsure (in truth, the ghost of the late Rokujo lady possessed her and prompted her to do so). Genji resolves to keep the secret of Kaoru's birth to the end. Meanwhile Yugiri, entrusted with Kashiwagi's last affairs by his friend, visits Kashiwagi's widow, Nio no Miya (Lady Ochiba), and is drawn to her.

Scenes

  1. 1The gravely ill Kashiwagi has Koshosho hold up a lamp; the Third Princess comes down from her sickbed to receive him, and Genji talks with them.
  2. 2Emperor Suzaku visits the Third Princess at Rokujo-in; she comes down from her sickbed to receive him, and Genji talks with them as well.
  3. 3Yugiri visits the ill Kashiwagi; Kashiwagi entrusts him with his affairs.
  4. 4On the fiftieth-day celebration of the young lord (Kaoru), Genji holds the infant and muses; the Third Princess, in nun's habit, is beyond a screen.
  5. 5On a spring day Yugiri visits the late Kashiwagi's wife, the Lady Ochiba, at Ichijo Palace, talks with her mother, and weeping, wipes his tears and blows his nose.
