At the banquet of the archery contest hosted by Yugiri, Prince Niou, Kaoru, and others line up their carriages and go to Rokujo-in; snow falls.

梅薫る下で六条院の還饗。女房ら物陰より覗き見る。

光源氏の没後、都では源氏の孫にあたる今上帝の三の宮（匂宮）と、柏木の実子でありながら源氏の次男として育てられた薫の二人が貴公子の双璧として名声を博す。生来の芳香を放つ薫に対し、対抗して名香を焚きしめる匂宮。出家の志を抱き物静かな薫と、華やかで好色な匂宮という対照的な二人の青年像が描かれる。

Years after Genji's passing, court society revolves around two young nobles: Prince Niou (Genji's grandson) and Kaoru (officially Genji's younger son, but secretly Kashiwagi's). While Kaoru emits an innate bodily fragrance, Niou rivals him by scenting robes with heavy incenses. Introspective Kaoru harbors thoughts of renouncing the world, in sharp contrast to the flamboyant, amorous Niou.
