夕霧 雲居雁を訪ねるが内大臣の命により襖は閉ざされていて会えない。 襖に寄りかかっていると内にいる雲居雁の独り言が聞こえる。

Yugiri visits Kumoi no Kari, but by the Naidaijin's order the sliding doors are shut and they cannot meet; leaning on the door he hears Kumoi no Kari talking to herself inside.

五節の舞姫を務める惟光の娘に付き添う童女を選び出すため、源氏はとりどりに美しい女童たちを御前に渡らせてみる。

To choose the girls to attend Koremitsu's daughter dancing the Gosechi, Genji has girls of various beauty presented before him.

惟光の息子、 夕霧よりの文を舞姫を務めた妹に渡す。 兄妹で文を読むところを惟光に見つかり、兄は逃げ出す。

Koremitsu's son delivers a letter from Yugiri to his sister who danced; Koremitsu catches the siblings reading it and the brother runs off.

六条院で、秋好中宮、箱の蓋に秋の花・紅葉を載せ、美しい童女に持たせて、紫の上に贈る。

At Rokujo-in, Empress Akikonomu places autumn flowers and colored leaves on a box lid and sends them with a beautiful girl to Murasaki.

源氏は息子・夕霧をあえて大学寮に入学させ学問に励ませるが、貴公子である夕霧は学問の重荷と従弟・雲居の雁（頭中将の娘）との仲を引き裂かれた寂しさに苦しむ。やがて夕霧は俊才ぶりを発揮して試験を突破。源氏は四町を占める大豪邸「六条院」を落成させ、春の町に紫の上、夏の町に花散里、秋の町に秋好中宮（旧斎宮女御）、冬の町に明石の御方を迎え入れ、一門の栄華を盤石にする。

Genji enrolls his son Yugiri in the University to master scholarship, while To no Chujo abruptly separates Yugiri from his childhood sweetheart, Kumoi no Kari. Demonstrating brilliant talent, Yugiri passes his rigorous examinations. Two years later, Genji completes his monumental Rokujo-in estate, settling Murasaki no Ue in Spring, Hanachirusato in Summer, Empress Akikonomu in Autumn, and the Lady of Akashi in Winter.
