Grieving alone in Uji, Naka no Kimi receives fresh bracken shoots from the mountain abbot. Kaoru loyally makes arrangements to relocate her to Niou's Nijo residence in the capital. As she departs Uji, Kaoru glimpses his lost love Oigimi in her and feels an unexpected pang of attraction, but chivalrously delivers her into Niou's protection.

- 2Visiting Prince Niou, who plucks the koto before the garden's red plums, Kaoru breaks off a red plum branch and recites a poem to him.
- 3The middle sister, moving to Prince Niou's in the capital, grieves for the eldest; Kaoru visits and looks through the hole in the sliding door where he once glimpsed the princesses, but cannot see inside.
