Utsusemi, who had gone down to Hitachi with her husband, returns to the capital. On the way to worship at Ishiyama-dera, Genji falls in with her procession and impulsively exchanges poems with her.

- 1On the way to Ishiyama, Genji meets the party of Hitachi no Suke and Utsusemi traveling to the capital at Osaka Barrier in autumn; they yield the road, draw their carriage into the shade, and watch the procession.
- 2Saemon no Suke (Kogimi) approaches Genji's carriage and receives a letter offered from it.
- 3Returning from Ishiyama, Genji meets Saemon no Suke and entrusts him with a letter to Utsusemi.
