Returning to the capital with her husband after his provincial tenure in Hitachi, Utsusemi unexpectedly encounters Genji's magnificent procession en route to Ishiyama Temple at the Osaka Barrier. Yielding the road and waiting under the trees, Utsusemi receives a poetic letter sent from Genji's carriage through her brother Kogimi, fondly recalling their unforgotten past.
Scenes
- 1On the way to Ishiyama, Genji meets the party of Hitachi no Suke and Utsusemi traveling to the capital at Osaka Barrier in autumn; they yield the road, draw their carriage into the shade, and watch the procession.
- 2Saemon no Suke (Kogimi) approaches Genji's carriage and receives a letter offered from it.
- 3Returning from Ishiyama, Genji meets Saemon no Suke and entrusts him with a letter to Utsusemi.
