Genji dedicates the Buddhist image for the tonsured Onna San no Miya. On a moonlit autumn evening, he listens to bell-crickets released in her garden and plays the zither before visiting Retired Emperor Reizei for an intimate conversation late into the night. Troubled that her mother Rokujo's wandering spirit finds no peace, Empress Akikonomu considers taking holy vows, but Genji dissuades her, sponsoring elaborate sutra-reading assemblies to pray for Rokujo's soul.
