薫、早春の玉鬘邸で梅に鳴く鶯を聞き、女房たちと歌を詠み交わす。

Kaoru, at Tamakazura's residence in early spring, hears a warbler singing on the plum and exchanges poems with the ladies.

梅の盛りの玉邸で薫、 蔵人少将に会う。 奥では女房たち、琵琶や箏を弾く。

At Tamakazura's residence in plum season, Kaoru meets Kurando no Shosho; within, the ladies play the biwa and koto.

玉鬘の姫君たち、庭の桜を賭けて碁を打つ。勝ち方の童女、庭におりて花を拾う。蔵人少将このようすを覗き見る。

Tamakazura's daughters play go wagering on the garden cherries; the winning girl goes into the garden to pick flowers; Kurando no Shosho peeks at this.

晩春の夕、冷泉院の庭で松にかかる藤を、薫、藤侍従とともに眺める。

On a late-spring evening, in Emperor Reizei's garden, Kaoru and Fuji no Chujo gaze at wisteria on a pine.

髭黒太政大臣の死後、未亡人となった玉鬘は二人の姫君（大君・中の君）の縁談に苦慮する。冷泉院や今上帝、夕霧の息子・蔵人少将らが求婚する中、源氏亡き後の重鎮となった薫は出家の思いを抱き静観する。結局、大君は高齢の冷泉院へ輿入れし、取り残された少将は中の君と結ばれるが、かつて玉鬘が誇った六条院の華やぎは薄れゆく。

Following Chancellor Higekuro's death, Tamakazura faces dilemmas over marrying off her two daughters. Despite passionate suits from suitors including Yugiri's son Kurando no Shosho, the elder daughter enters the palace of the aging Retired Emperor Reizei, leaving the distraught young courtier to marry the younger sister instead.
