Tamakazura escapes her suitors and travels up to the capital on a fast boat.

秋の初瀬に詣でた右近、同宿の人々の中に顔見知りの女を認め、呼び出して、玉鬘一行と知る。弓を持つ男等同行している。

Ukon, visiting Hatsuse in autumn, recognizes a familiar woman among her fellow lodgers, calls her out, and learns it is Tamakazura's party; men with bows accompany them.

初瀬参詣の玉鬘、右近に再会し、高台にある宿坊で積もる話をして過ごす。下の御堂に参詣する人、多数。

Tamakazura, on pilgrimage to Hatsuse, is reunited with Ukon, and they spend the time talking in an elevated lodging; many people visit the lower hall.

六条院の西の対に引き取られた玉鬘のもと、夜になってから訪れる源氏。右近、妻戸を開いて迎え入れる。

Genji visits Tamakazura, taken in at the west wing of Rokujo-in, after nightfall; Ukon opens the door to welcome him.

源氏、几帳を押しやり初めて玉鬘を見る。 右近、灯火をかきあげて近くに寄せる。

Genji pushes aside the screen and sees Tamakazura for the first time; Ukon lifts the lamp and brings it near.

歳の暮れ、源氏と紫の上、とりどりの衣裳を婦人たちに配るため、 選び整える。

At year's end Genji and Murasaki sort and arrange robes to distribute to the ladies.

夕顔の遺児・玉鬘は乳母に伴われて筑紫の大宰府で美しく成長するが、粗野な土豪・大夫の監の求婚から逃れるため命がけで京へ脱出する。実父・内大臣の手がかりを求めて初瀬の長谷寺へ参詣した折、偶然にもかつて母に仕えていた右近と劇的な再会を果たす。事情を知った源氏は実の娘として六条院の夏の町へ引き取り、その美貌に心を奪われつつ後見人となる。

Yugao's orphan, Tamakazura, matures into striking beauty in Kyushu, fleeing to Kyoto to escape an aggressive rural suitor. On a pilgrimage to Hase-dera Temple to find news of her father, To no Chujo, she miraculously encounters her mother's former waiting-maid Ukon. Informed of her survival, Genji welcomes Tamakazura into the Summer quarter of the Rokujo-in as his own acknowledged daughter, while silently captivated by her charm.
