On a hot summer day Genji cools off at the fishing pavilion, has river fish prepared, and chats with the Naidaijin's sons.

夕方、源氏、玉鬘を訪ね、貴公子たちも同行。前栽に撫子咲き乱れる。

In the evening Genji visits Tamakazura, accompanied by young noblemen; pink flowers bloom profusely in the garden.

月のない夜、篝火をたかせ、源氏は玉鬘に琴を教える。玉鬘への恋慕つのる。

On a moonless night, with bonfires lit, Genji teaches Tamakazura the koto; his longing for her grows.

暑い日、雲居雁が手枕をしてうたた寝する姿を見た内大臣、起こして諫める。

On a hot day the Naidaijin sees Kumoi no Kari napping on her arm and wakes her to admonish her.

猛暑の夏の日、源氏は夕霧や公達を六条院の釣殿に招き、水で冷やした瓜や鮎を食しながら歓談する。内大臣が玉鬘への対抗心から引き取ったもう一人の実娘・近江の君の無作法で奇矯な言動が話題となり、一同の失笑を買う。夕暮れ、撫子（常夏）の花が咲き乱れる庭を眺めながら、源氏は玉鬘を訪れて和琴の手ほどきをし、求愛の情を重ねる。

On a sultry summer afternoon, Genji hosts Yugiri and courtiers at the cooling fishing pavilion, laughing over tales of the vulgar and rambunctious Lady of Omi, whom To no Chujo recently adopted. Later, amid wild pinks (tokonatsu) flourishing in the garden, Genji visits Tamakazura to instruct her on the Japanese zither, intensifying his covert courtship.
