正月、中の君のもとで若君をあやし遊ぶ匂宮。そこへ、居所を隠している浮舟よりの文をつけた小松と髭籠を持った女童が走って来る。

At New Year Prince Niou plays with the young lord at the middle sister's; a girl running with a small pine and a basket attached to a letter from Ukifune, who is hiding her whereabouts, arrives.

匂宮、忍んで宇治の浮舟を訪ね、隙間より室内を覗く。浮舟は縫物をする女たちの間に臥す。

Prince Niou steals to visit Ukifune at Uji and peeks inside through a gap; Ukifune lies among the women sewing.

春の日を浮舟とともに過ごす匂宮、男女が寄り添って乱している絵を描いて浮舟に見せる。

Prince Niou, spending a spring day with Ukifune, draws a picture of a man and woman lying close together and shows it to her.

雪の中、匂宮、浮舟を小舟に乗せて宇治川を渡り、橘の小島で愛を誓う。

In the snow Prince Niou sets Ukifune in a small boat, crosses the Uji River, and pledges love on the tangerine islet.

夜、宇治に忍んだ匂宮、薫の命で警戒が厳しく邸に入れず、野原に侍従を呼び出して逢う。

At night Prince Niou, stealing into Uji, cannot enter the residence because Kaoru has set strict guards, and calls a lady out to the field to meet.

宇治に隠された浮舟の居所を突き止めた匂宮は、薫を装って宇治山荘に侵入し契りを結ぶ。情熱的な匂宮に浮舟も次第に心を惹かれていく。しかし慎重な薫と情熱的な匂宮という対照的な二人の貴公子から同時に求愛され、浮舟の二股関係は露見寸前に陥る。両者への板挟みと裏切りの自責に耐えかねた浮舟は、夜の宇治川への投身自殺を決意する。

Discovering Ukifune's location, Niou disguises himself as Kaoru, gains entrance to the Uji villa, and seduces her. Ukifune finds herself swayed by Niou's fiery ardor while remaining indebted to Kaoru's serene constancy. Torn between the two competing noblemen and seeing discovery inevitable, the guilt-ridden Ukifune flees into the dark to drown herself in the turbulent Uji River.
