明石の姫君の東宮入内を前に、源氏は六条院の女君たち（紫の上・花散里・明石の御方）や朝顔の元斎院に薫物の調合を競わせる「薫物合」を催す。判定役の蛍兵部卿宮を迎えた優雅な春の夜、調香された名香の優劣が競われる。あわせて源氏は入内調度として古今名筆の手習い草子を用意させ、晩春に姫君の盛大な裳着を執り行う。

Masterpiece calligraphy scrolls and albums are bound for her dowry, and late in spring the princess's coming-of-age ceremony is celebrated with exquisite splendor.
