Niou marries Roku no Kimi, the daughter of Yugiri, and Naka no Kimi, pregnant, feels anxious about her future. Kaoru begins to feel love for her while consoling her, and Naka no Kimi is perplexed, but she safely bears a boy and gains a settled position. Meanwhile Kaoru marries Onna Ni no Miya, a princess of the present Emperor, but his sorrow is not healed. On a pilgrimage to Hatsuse, however, he glimpses Ukifune, Naka no Kimi's half-sister, who is the very image of the late Oigimi, and is stirred.

- 1The Emperor, thinking to marry the Second Princess to Kaoru, summons Kaoru as a go partner; it is the time when white chrysanthemums in the east garden of the Seiryoden have changed color from frost.

- 3Seeing off Prince Niou, who sets out for Rokujo-in to marry Yugiri's Sixth Daughter, the middle sister frets.
- 4Prince Niou, seeing the mountain ivy and letter sent as a gift to the middle sister by Kaoru, who visited Uji, jealously yet deliberately urges her to reply.
- 5Prince Niou plays the biwa in the late-autumn garden, and the middle sister leans on an armrest in distress.
