Niou contracts a formal alliance with Yugiri's daughter Roku no Kimi, alarming the pregnant Naka no Kimi. While comforting her, Kaoru expresses affection, but she deflects his advances by hinting at her unacknowledged half-sister, Ukifune. Kaoru later accepts marriage with the Emperor's Second Princess, yet remains inconsolable until he accidentally catches sight of Ukifune at Uji, stunned by her likeness to Oigimi.
