In autumn, the first anniversary of Kashiwagi's death is observed. Yugiri, as guardian to Lady Ochiba, is given Kashiwagi's beloved transverse flute in thanks by the lady's mother, but that night Kashiwagi appears in a dream and says that the one to whom he wishes to give the flute is another, hinting at Kaoru. Yugiri consults Genji about this, but Genji, evading the question, keeps the flute in his keeping without a clear answer.
Scenes
- 1Genji reads the letter attached to the bamboo shoots sent from the mountain Suzaku-in to the Third Princess.
- 2Young Kaoru crawls out and puts the bamboo shoots in his mouth or tosses them about; Genji watches, laughing and admonishing him.
- 3Genji holds Kaoru on his knee, speaks to him, and playfully composes a poem.
- 4In autumn Yugiri visits the Lady Ochiba and they play the piece So-shi-koi together; on leaving he is given Kashiwagi's beloved flute by the Ichijo Lady Mother and tries blowing it.
- 5In a dream of Yugiri, who has returned late at night, Kashiwagi appears and says the flute was meant for another.
- 6Kumoi no Kari holds a crying infant frightened in the night; Yugiri also rises.
