薫、横川の僧都を訪ね、浮舟入水後の事情を聞き、浮舟の弟の小君に文を届けさせるようにと頼む。

Kaoru visits the bishop of Yokawa, hears the circumstances after Ukifune's immersion, and asks him to have Ukifune's younger brother Kogimi deliver a letter.

浮舟のいる小野の里の遥か向こうの谷を、薫の立派な行列が通る。 尼たちそれを眺める。

Kaoru's fine procession passes the valley far beyond the Ono village where Ukifune lives; the nuns watch it.

小君、薫の文を小野の庵室に届け、尼君開いて浮舟にみせる。

Kogimi delivers Kaoru's letter to the hermitage at Ono; the nun opens it and shows it to Ukifune.

浮舟の生存を確信した薫は横川の僧都を訪ねて真偽を確かめ、浮舟の異父弟・小君を使者として小野の庵へ文を届ける。小君から薫の手紙を差し出された浮舟は激しく動揺するが、かつての愛執に立ち戻ることを恐れ、「人違いでしょう」と言下に面会も返書も拒絶する。戻った小君から報告を受けた薫は、誰か別の男が彼女を隠しているのではないかという疑念に苛まれながら立ち尽くす。

Learning Ukifune lives, Kaoru sends her younger half-brother Kogimi to her retreat at Ono with an urgent letter. Deeply shaken yet terrified of rekindling tragic passions, the nun Ukifune turns Kogimi away, claiming he has mistaken her for someone else and refusing even to open the missive. When Kogimi returns empty-handed, Kaoru is left suspended in torment, wondering if another lover has concealed her.
